The launch of The Essences collection by the prestigious Omani high perfumery house Amouage transcends the typical storytelling we’re accustomed to. While it’s common practice for brands to describe what a fragrance evokes, the inspirations behind it, and the perfumer responsible for its creation – a rare but growing trend especially in niche perfumery – along with a list of expensive ingredients, Amouage goes further. With The Essences, a trio of exceptional fragrances, the house pushes boundaries, blending centuries-old processes with a redefinition of the concept of perfume as an art form.
Conceived by Chief Creative Officer Renaud Salmon, The Essences isn’t simply a collection of exquisitely crafted fragrances made by renowned perfumers and featuring the highest quality ingredients. Inspired by a desire to embrace the transformative power of time, this new collection introduces a series of meticulously developed innovations, most notably a groundbreaking process called double-infusion. Amouage faces the challenge of communicating these technical intricacies to the average consumer in a way that highlights the unique qualities of this premium-priced collection. This article aims to clarify these elements.

The primary innovation of Amouage’s The Essences collection lies in its unique double-infusion process, which moves beyond the narrative of maceration. In this process, each fragrance concentrate is infused with sandalwood chips sourced from ancient Australian groves. Following a six-month aging period, the bioethanol used for dilution is infused in artisanal oakwood barrels. The initial infusion imparts a creamy, meditative smoothness from the sandalwood, while the second adds a deep, smoky character from the oakwood to the bioethanol. This two-stage process results in perfumes that possess an indescribable, nuanced patina, embodying time and patience.

Bertrand Duchaufour’s Reasons embodies the enduring impact of the past with its warm, unassuming hazelnut opening that evolves into a complex blend enhanced by herbaceous, fruity Davana and grounded by the smoky, earthy depth of Palo Santo, exuding timeless gravitas. Lustre by Julien Rasquinet and Paul Guerlain celebrates the dazzling immediacy of the present with an effervescent burst of cardamom softened by creamy orris and smooth sandalwood, culminating in a warm, sophisticated vanilla base that radiates romantic elegance. Cécile Zarokian’s Outlands explores the enigmatic pull of the future, starting with bright citruses and candied lemon, progressing through rich, verdant patchouli, and culminating in an amber accord infused with resins and balsams, evoking a journey through light and shadow toward self-reflection and transformation.
Reasons, Lustre, Outlands
The theme of time is seamlessly communicated through the meticulously crafted flacon and packaging of Amouage’s Essences collection. The flacon, designed in collaboration with Jérôme Faillant-Dumas of L.O.V.E. Paris, is made from matte, sand-colored ceramic with sculpted ridges that evoke the Omani desert sands and form the iconic twelve-pointed Amouage emblem when viewed from above. Beneath the bottle, an innovative, gleaming medal displays details such as the batch number and contents. The packaging, conceived by Bill Radzinowicz, features flowing curves that resemble waves and incorporate an hourglass motif, a nod to the brand’s original name inspiration. Collaborating with Louise Mertens, Renaud Salmon created visuals inspired by the lost city of Ubar, using artistic distortions to represent Amouage’s intricate relationship with time.
